7 Myths About Working Remotely

MYTH 1: Working remotely means that your company will have little to no culture.

Company culture can be just as strong in a virtual business environment! All it really requires is commitment.

And if your employees are committed and dedicated to building the culture, you will create something special.

Remember those coworkers who swing by your cubicle every so often to chat for 30 to 45 minutes? Or how the long journey up the stairs sounded more appealing than getting back at your desk? But even so, people are productive in an office.

It’s the same with working remotely.

Working remotely will present other distractions. People will take their dog outside, grab a snack from the kitchen and check their laundry. That’s OK.

Just because you’re remote doesn’t mean you can’t take breaks! Acknowledging that remote workers are still human is so important. When you accept that people will take breaks, just like they would in an office, you will understand that people will continue to be productive — no matter where they’re working.

MYTH 3: Working remotely means you have a great work-life balance.

Just because you work from home doesn’t mean you have your work-life balance figured out. Like any other job, you need to find what works for you.

No, being remote doesn’t mean you’re available 24/7. But it does require you to set boundaries and communicate them, to ensure you are creating space for yourself and your family.

For example, set your work hours and put them in your shared calendar. If you have an instant messaging communication tool like Slack, allow notifications for the times that you intend to work. If it’s outside of your working hours, try to leave it for tomorrow.

The most important thing when you work from home is that you do figure out the best way to prioritize your wellbeing, family and life alongside your work.

MYTH 4: Communication will lack among your team.

Have you seen recent technology? We believe that your communication will be stronger when you work remotely. You can reach anyone in the company at any time.

Even if you experience time zone differences, you have better access to previous communication threads or work logs — allowing people to stay in-the-know more than an office. You can even record your meetings, which gives people the opportunity to go back and listen to what was said. It’s also useful for people who couldn’t originally attend!

There are also a handful of tools that will keep your employees connected, help manage everyone’s projects and propel your business to achieve its goals.

We recommend Slack for overall communication among your employees, G-Suite for an affordable option to house your files and easily collaborate on projects, and Zoom for the best “face-to-face” connection you’ll get.

There are plenty of other useful tools, but these three will make a HUGE difference on your communication while you work remotely.

MYTH 5: Going virtual will cost more.

When you go virtual, you actually save money!

Yep, that’s right.

You aren’t paying for office space, desks, computers, office supplies… You may pay for the supplies your employees need to work efficiently (i.e., computer mouse, headset) but all of the costs are less expensive than a traditional workspace.

Now what are you going to do with that extra money for your business?

MYTH 6: Remote workers don’t need to get ready for the day. They can stay in their pjs!

It’s really up to the business. Some remote companies still want to maintain a business professional or business casual look. And that’s great!

Some companies are OK with employees wearing casual clothes every day.
